Class description

In this course, students will develop technological skills in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs, as well as Internet use. Students will also learn the major components of the computer, basic computer vocabulary, and the history of the personal computer industry.

Objectives

By the end of the semester students will have:

• Knowledge of basic computer terms and hardware
• Knowledge of the history of the personal computer industry
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office software to solve application problems, including the use of Word, Excel, Publisher, and Access.
• Understanding of computer ethics including copyright protection laws and the ethical and safe use of the Internet
• Knowledge of the Internet for research and decision making

Prerequisites: None.

Mr. Gentle graduated from Rochester High School in Rochester, Michigan. Following high school, he attened the University of Michigan, where he received a degree in Philosphy and a teaching certificate with a major in mathematics and a minor in anthropology. He taught school and coached tennis for two years at the International School Nido de Aguilas in Santiago, Chile. Upon returning to the States, he resumed studies at the University of Michigan until receiving a master's degree in Computer Science. He worked for 5 years as a Software Engineer for General Electric Medical Systems. In 1988 he accepted the position as the Technogy Facilitator/High School Computer and Math Teacher/Varsity Tennis Coach for North Muskegon Schools.
